  Dr. Kumar Venkitanarayanan received Excellence in Research Award  
Dr. Kumar Venkitanarayanan (1980 batch, COVAS, Mannuthy), Professor of Microbiology in the Department of Animal Science at the University of Connecticut, USA recently received Excellence in Research award.

Dr. Venkitanarayanan, trained in traditional and molecular microbiology, studies the potential of natural molecules for controlling zoonotic and animal pathogens, especially antibiotic resistant bacteria. A significant scientific contribution from his research is demonstrating the efficacy of several plant-derived molecules for attenuating virulence and reducing antimicrobial resistance in pathogens. He has published more than 60 peer-reviewed journal manuscripts, 7 book chapters and characterized five new bacterial genes. Having successful in garnering more than 4 million dollars as funding for his research, Dr. Venkitanarayanan serves on the editorial board of 3 prestigious international journals, and has supervised  13 MS/Ph.D. candidates, including several students from COVAS.

Currently Dr. Venkitanarayanan serves as the chair of graduate student selection committee in his department.
